I am getting into the business, so far I have been cutting with a 21' Honda. I found this Lesco 48' walk behind mower. The owner is wanting about $1,500.00. This is what I know about the mower: -This mower was used on private property, NO COMMERCIAL USE -Has about 200 hours on it -Oil change every 50 hours -4 Speed tranny w/ reverse -It has been sitting in storage for about 2-3 years (With oil in the mower) -The mower was started turned on every few weeks -Tires are in good condition Do you think this is a good purchase? I'm not familiar with that particular machine, but generally speaking, a used 48 inch walk behind is a good choice, assuming you don't have a lot of gated properties in your area. You can ramp it up into a pickup truck and do without a trailer for a while, but it doesn't leave much room in the bed for other stuff.

Sounds like it's a belt drive unit, I'm not a big fan of them because the belts can slip in wet conditions, they take a good bit of hand strength to operate (fatigue can be a problem) and reverse is really more like a reverse assist. You still have to pull it back, so you soon learn not to get yourself in situations where you need to reverse. It's also probably a fixed deck machine, and although scalping isn't likely to be a big issue on a 48 inch machine, I prefere a floating deck for ease of height adjustment. I also prefer a hydro drive machine. There's no muscling around a hydro machine. But, you're not going to get all of that in a machine for $1500. As far as the hours, that's low, should have lots of life left in it.

You ever come to Houston, first rounds on me! Well first thing you need to do is make sure it will fit your operation. How big are your lawns?

How's access? How are you going to transport it? Make sure it starts, runs and idles well, goes, turns, cuts. Make sure the cut looks even. Look under the deck and grab the spindles (don't cut yourself on the blades, lol) and wiggle them and make sure they're not a bunch of play in them. Check the belts and see if they're all cracked. But mostly just fire it up and see how it sounds and how it operates and if there's any 'funny' sounds.

I'm not that much of a mechanic. Maybe someone else here can give you a checklist or something.I dunno.

Oh, and do you have a Lesco dealer near you for parts? They don't sell mower's anyone and they don't service them.

For now I think with these 2 mowers I should be in good shape. I won't reconsider another mower until I have about 40-50 accounts.
