The CR-V was introduced in Japan at dealerships only and was regarded as a luxury vehicle in Japan due to the exterior width dimensions exceeding Japanese Government. Electron Blue was introduced in 2000 to replace Submarine Blue Pearl, while Satin Silver Metallic replaced Sebring Silver Metallic in 2001. New 16 inch wheels replaced the previous 15 inch versions. Changes included new taillights and headlights with clear indicators and two separate bulbs for low beams and high beams, the previous setup used single bulb for both low and high beams. The taillights now used clear lenses instead of amber for the turning indicators. The grille was also changed; it had two horizontal bars instead of one. The front bumper design was slightly changed, it now has round fog lights compared to the previous trapezium fog lights and in addition to the lower grill there are two horizontal bars instead of one. The rear bumper reflectors were longer and narrower.

2005 facelift On the inside of the car, the EX trim received upgrades which included steering wheel-mounted audio controls and an outside temperature monitor. The stereo system was also ready (USA but not Canada). All CR-V models also had revised rear seat headrests, which had been redesigned to reduce rear view blockage. At around 75,000 the check engine light came on on our 2001 CRV and it turned out to be a bad valve. Cylinder block had to be replaced. A very expensive repair, about $2,000. Then shortly thereafter distributor failed had to be replaced and shelled out another $800, then transmission fluid master cylinder failed.

About $300 to fix. Recently had a loose timing belt but dealer tightened it and have not had any major problems since. Since engine has so many new parts hoping we can get 200,000 mi out of this car. Overall disappointed with this car. Was expecting better quality from Honda. Hoping to drive it to 200,000 miles to get our money's worth from all of the expensive repairs.

The Check Engine Light started to Flash. Performance wasn't compromised. I was concerned and had the random misfire code checked out. The engine compression test results were off. I had a valve adjustment and the CEL is off. I was advised that when the CEL came on again I'd have a considerable amount to spend to right this problem. While replacing the head and valves I'd have the timing belt and water pump changed.

That was something I planned to do in 15,000 miles. Looking at about $2500. Not repaired in full yet. Honda has disappointed me. From my Toyota experience, I'd think a blown head in might occur in 30,000 (2 years @ 21 y.o.). But then again, I'd have some time to save for a newer vehicle. My mechanic basically just said that the check engine light was on because of issues with low psi - about 50 - in cylinder 2 ( I believe).

He said it needed to be replaced and would cost between $2400 - $4500 depending on what else may be damaged. I can't afford to fix it but I feel that this is a pretty common problem and Honda should pay for all or most of the cost for it to be fixed. I've loved my previous Honda vehicles but this issue is turning me off to Honda and I will be driving it until it dies then purchasing a Ford Explorer, another favorite, and Ford actually fixed an issue I had at there expense and there wasn't a recall for that issue either. Honda needs to step up its customer service. I will not be a repeat customer.
