Like with the chainsaw demo use a hammer and a steel driver of some kind to tap it loose in the coiunter clockwise direction. Were you able to get the clutch housing removed. That's the cup-like part that engages the clutch to drive the weed-eater shaft. You may need a flashlight to see down inside the cup's shaft.
In mine there was a screw that required a small flat-bladed screwdriver to remove it. Good luck, Fellow learner. Starter Dogs won't release the starter string pulley.
The string could not be pulled. Ordered new pulley, starter coil, new gasline since the 31WG Trimmer requires almost full disassembly to get at string pulley. After researching the task taking this string trimmer apart, I've read it may be the Starter Dogs' Springs. In addition after viewing some pulley replacement and clutch removal videos, the question became, Can i use either Spanner Wrench or Poulan part#530031112 to remove clutch assembly? Careful use of a lock wrench is prevented by a plastic collar type guard that is part of the one piece front end housing limiting access to clutch assembly, on this model.
The Poulan WeedEater 31WG is not maintenance or repair friendly because it is entirely enclosed in 3 main plastic housing parts. So this repair turned out to be a complete rebuild project, with perhaps some access modification because this machine has served me well for 6-7 yrs.
Removed Spark plug wire grommet to pull boot through bottom of front housing finally separating that front cover exposing clutch assembly and fly wheel. The string pulley is on top of the starter coil, mounted inside the head of front housing. Removed Clutch Assembly easily with a Grip Wrench that till now was useless other than to open jars with twist caps!

Lol Upon examining clutch assembly the following questions came up: Questions: 1) The washer sandwiched between front of plastic housing and clutch assembly part #530094189 has 4 small silver triangular shapes on washer surface, that may become notched with more wear from clutch expanding and contracting I'm assuming. Should I replace the washer? 2) Clutch Assembly has a narrow silver band like surface on either side of metal pads.
Is this normal wear that does not require replacement? When do these parts require replacement?

When you said you checked the muffler did you pull the muffler off and inspect the exhaust port? What does the piston look like when you look at it through the exhaust port? Bright and shinney?
Do you see scratchs or scoring? Do the piston rings spring back if you push on them with a pick? I have some new units that when lifted by the recoil rope the rope will slowly pull all the way out. If the piston looks dull, brown, scratch, or scored then chances are compression is not what it is supposed to be.
